Flood Mapping and Flood Warning Programs

Program purpose

The $9.5 million Flood Mapping and Flood Warning Program is being administered by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) as part of the broader $242 million extraordinary assistance package jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) to support Queensland communities in their recovery from the North and Far North Queensland Monsoon Trough, 25 January to 14 February 2019.

The purpose of Flood Mapping and Flood Warning Program is to deliver three projects to help ensure a best practice approach to catchment resilience, flood warning strategies and the management of flood warning infrastructure in Queensland:

  • Flood Warning Infrastructure Network Project
  • Townsville Recalibrated Flood Modelling and Mapping Project
  • Burdekin and Haughton Catchment Resilience Strategy Project. 

Flood Warning Infrastructure Network Project

The $8 million Flood Warning Infrastructure Network Project will analyse existing flood warning infrastructure, working with the Bureau of Meteorology and councils to identify high priority locations requiring additional flood warning infrastructure capability including repairs of and/or installation of new infrastructure.

Burdekin and Haughton Catchment Resilience Strategy Project

The $1 million Burdekin and Haughton Catchment Resilience Strategy Project will develop locally-led and regionally-coordinated resilience solutions to address recent and emerging disaster risks for councils in the catchment area including Townsville City Council.

Townsville Recalibrated Flood Modelling and Mapping Project

The $500,000 Townsville Recalibrated Flood Modelling and Mapping Project will be administered by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) with the purpose of supporting Townsville City Council to update and recalibrate flood modelling and mapping across the council area including the Ross River.

The Townsville Recalibrated Flood Modelling and Mapping Project will include the updating of online content available to the community, and additional items to align with the updated modelling, such as review of the flood warning classifications, and analytics to readily identify affected properties, infrastructure and demographics for reference in flood emergencies. The project will also include advancement of the Townsville Floodplain Management Strategy, including the Bohle River, Sturt, Gordon Creek, and Ross Creek Flood Management Schemes.
