$30 million fund supports recovery for councils, sporting clubs in flood affected north

A $30 million disaster assistance fund is supporting flood affected sporting clubs and local councils in North and Far North Queensland to recover from this year’s devastating floods.

Under the Sport and Recreation Recovery Program (SRRG), up to $1 million per facility is available to assist eligible not-for-profit sport and racing clubs as well as local councils.

Jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), the SRRG funding provides an opportunity to repair, rebuild, and restore vital sport and recreation facilities.

These include canteens, amenities, playing courts, fences, lights, racetracks, synthetic pitches, electrical equipment, shade sails, and carparks.

Additionally, where value for money can be demonstrated, the program encourages rebuilding damaged infrastructure in ways that align with modern knowledge and practices.

This approach aims to better withstand future disasters and ensure stronger community resilience.

The extensive flooding across the region in early 2025 caused significant damage to community spaces, particularly in areas such as the Hinchinbrook, Cassowary Coast, Burdekin, Charters Towers, and Townsville local government areas.

Rebuilding these facilities through the DRFA is crucial for supporting both the physical and mental wellbeing of residents, as well as fostering community togetherness and recovery.

Local sporting competitions and recreational activities play a key role in helping communities return to normal after disasters.

By minimising disruptions and enabling the prompt resumption of local sport, the DRFA is ensuring communities across North and Far North Queensland can rebuild and recover stronger and more united.
