Severe weather season review to build future preparedness

In response to Queensland’s 2023-24 severe weather season, a review will be conducted by the state’s Inspector-General Emergency Management (IGEM).

The review will examine Queensland’s overall disaster responses and practices to identify possible improvements in the way future extreme events are managed.

Since July 2023 Queensland has experienced bushfires, cyclones, severe storms, tropical lows and flooding.

The impacts of these events, and of any others that occur prior to this season’s conclusion, will be included in the review, which is bound by terms of reference that provide the key considerations for lines of enquiry.

IGEM will review the effectiveness of preparedness, response and transitional activities, timing and effectiveness of warnings, community awareness of disaster arrangements, and coordination of personnel.

One of the most important aspects of the review though is engagement.

In the coming months, IGEM will meet with agencies across all levels of government, non-government organisations, and impacted communities to seek the views of community members.

The review findings and recommendations will be underpinned by research commissioned by the IGEM.

Although Queensland has a deserved reputation for being a world leader when it comes to disaster preparation and response, the review is an opportunity for the state to ensure continuous improvement to its disaster management arrangements.

Each extreme weather event is different, and because of this they all provide an important learning opportunity and the chance to refine and improve statewide responses to natural disasters.

Submissions are now open and can be made via the IGEM website: www.igem.qld.gov.au/submissions.

An interim IGEM report is expected by 30 July 2024, with the final review report to be provided by 30 September 2024.
