State-of-the-art Local Disaster Coordination Centre opens in Gympie

A ribbon cutting event and facility tour marked the official opening of Gympie's new Local Disaster Coordination Centre, with the town's heritage listed Old Bank Building transformed into a fit-for-purpose emergency management facility.

The major refurbishment has been made possible with $500,000 investment from the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Queensland Resilience and Risk Reduction Fund (QRRRF), with Gympie Regional Council also contributing to the delivery of the project.

The 2023-24 disaster season underlined the immense value designated LDCCs have when severe weather strikes.

They allow for a streamlined and coordinated response that minimises the impacts on communities and accelerates the transition to recovery.

This state-of-the-art LDCC ends Gympie Regional Council's reliance on a makeshift disaster coordination centre in existing council offices.

Key features of the upgrade include cutting-edge technology in the operations room, new breakout areas, and a media centre for timely updates to the community.

During emergencies and disaster events the new LDCC will become the hub of Gympie’s enhanced disaster response to all communities across the broader region.

The centre also boasts improved accessibility, infrastructure enhancements, and soundproofing, ensuring staff can remain focused under pressure.

Gympie has been activated for disaster assistance no less than 15 times since 2011.

That’s why this LDCC is such an important investment for Gympie and the broader region.

Whether it’s floods, cyclones or bushfires, resilient communities are stronger and recover faster from disasters.

This facility provides assurance that, when the time comes, Gympie Regional Council stands ready and equipped to support residents in need.
