Queensland beaches bounce back from Tropical Cyclone Alfred

A $57 million disaster recovery package will help replenish southern Queensland beaches from Bundaberg to the Gold Coast ravaged by ex-Tropical cyclone Alfred.

Under the 2025 Tropical Cyclone Alfred Environmental Recovery Package: Coastline Rehabilitation Program, the funding will help eight councils restore popular stretches of coastline.

Eligible councils include Brisbane, Bundaberg, Fraser Coast, Gold Coast, Gympie, Livingstone, Moreton Bay, and Sunshine Coast.

Addressing the severe erosion caused by Alfred, the program will support 20 targeted initiatives, including sand reshaping and vegetation planting to help restore damaged beaches to their natural state and strengthen coastal defences against future weather events.

Councils in the most affected areas were encouraged to apply for funding last year, with successful projects focusing on beach replenishment and long-term coastline resilience.

The recovery of beaches will not only revive important habitats for local wildlife but also provide a renewed boost to tourism that is crucial to the economies of coastal communities.

This program is a key initiative of the broader $74 million Environmental Recovery Package to support recovery, improve condition and build resilience in impacted environments.
