Disaster funds made available for flood hit Quilpie Shire

Quilpie Shire Council has been activated for vital disaster recovery funding assistance after heavy rains fell across the region throughout June and July.

The unseasonal winter wet saw Quilpie record its highest monthly rainfall total for 2026, with the June rain accounting for almost half of the shire's year-to-date rainfall.

Flooding from the extraordinary event has placed significant strain on the region's roads, bridges and community infrastructure.

Road closures disrupted access between Quilpie township and other key towns in the local government area such as Windorah and Eromanga, and saw many rural properties isolated for an extended period.

The funding support, provided by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the joint Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), will allow council to recoup the costs of response and recovery activities across the LGA.

This includes clean-up efforts and measures to ensure public safety, such as traffic management, as well as emergency repairs and long-term reconstruction of the road network.

Council has engaged contractors including Proterra Group, APV, Tolbra and Mascot to undertake debris removal and repair works on behalf of Queensland's Department of Transport and Main Roads.

The Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) will work closely with council to support project delivery and ensure all eligible costs can be claimed.

Quilpie Shire Council is also currently receiving DRFA assistance for other major disasters over the past 18 months including this year's monsoon event and the 2025 western Queensland floods.

Through the DRFA, regional communities like Quilpie can have confidence the funding they need to rebuild is available, and that they won’t have to face the cost of recovery on their own.
