Disaster support announced for Scenic Rim Council
Financial assistance is now available to Scenic Rim Regional Council for its response and recovery efforts following a damaging period of rains and flooding.
The region was drenched by heavy rainfall for a week beginning Sunday 10 November, with slow moving low pressure systems combining with volatile storm fronts.
Coulson Crossing near Boonah received 55mm in just a few hours, and was impacted by two severe storms in one afternoon.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) recorded more than 160mm of rainfall across the Scenic Rim between 10 and 17 November.
During this time, floodwaters made some roads impassable and resulted in severe impacts across the local road network.
Severe landslips were recorded in a number of locations, and some key roads failed completely, including Knapp Creek Road south of Kooralbyn.
With the activation of the jointly funded Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), Scenic Rim Regional Council can access support for the reconstruction of essential public assets and counter disaster operations.
This includes the extraordinary expenses associated with immediate response and community recovery, and costs associated with emergency road repairs and the reconstruction of damaged roads.
The Scenic Rim Storms and Rainfall event is the latest disaster to affect Queenslanders this month, following on from intense bushfires in the north and south of the state.
QRA works every day to support disaster hit communities throughout Queensland's 77 local government areas, and stands ready to act quickly when severe weather arrives.
