Landslip repairs secure Coolum coastal stretch

The completed works bring long-term protection to the popular Sunshine Coast coastal area, providing a safer experience for everyone who drives, walks or rides along this scenic corridor.

Sunshine Coast Council delivered the project in partnership with specialist contractors, with reconstruction jointly funded through the Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), administered by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA).

First Bay is one of 15 landslip repairs completed across the Sunshine Coast through the DRFA.

As part of the project, more than 145 metres of pedestrian pathway has been rebuilt along the eastern side of David Low Way, and around 12,500 new plants introduced to grow the beauty of the natural landscape.

More than 90 deep foundation piles were installed to anchor the slope, some reaching 18 metres below ground, with steel-reinforced capping beams used to lock the hillside in place and protect public infrastructure.

During repair works there has been 1,100 cubic metres of concrete poured, enough to fill 450 backyard swimming pools.

Around 110 tonnes of reinforcing steel has been used, and 1,000 tonnes of asphalt was laid to rebuild the road surface.

First Bay’s reconstruction is a massive win for the Coolum community, and the many visitors who enjoy this stretch of the Sunshine Coast.

The repairs significantly reduce future risk while enhancing the beauty and views of the area.

Public consultation has been critical to the project’s end result, and locals are thanked for their feedback, and also their patience during construction.
