Major boost to water security for Carpentaria Shire

An $18.1 million investment to upgrade critical water infrastructure in the Gulf Country is set to provide a reliable, year-round water supply for residents right across Carpentaria.

Works will see the duplication of the raw water main servicing Normanton and Karumba, delivering much needed water security to one of the most remote parts of Queensland.

This significant development for Carpentaria communities will safeguard their access to clean, safe drinking water, even during flooding events.

Additionally, it will ensure the infrastructure is future-proofed to meet growing tourism demands in the region.

Central to the duplication works is the installation of a raw water irrigation network to supply untreated water to key businesses and public areas, lessening the load on the Normanton Water Treatment Plant.

Upgrades will also improve ageing infrastructure and ensure a consistent supply of untreated water to local treatment facilities, supporting both residential and industrial growth.

Funding for the project is through the $450 million Queensland Resilience and Risk Reduction Program (QRRRP), the Queensland Government's flagship disaster mitigation initiative.

The QRRRP is funded using efficiencies realised under the joint Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Improved access to quality drinking water will have a transformative impact for Carpentaria residents and the increasing number of visitors who travel to the Gulf each year.

The Queensland and Australian Governments remain committed to investing in reconstruction and resilience to better prepare for the challenges posed by increasingly severe weather events.
