Major milestone for Cyclone Jasper recovery in the Far North

Long-term reconstruction works are underway on Gillies Range Road in Far North Queensland to repair extensive damage caused by ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper.

Works on the essential link between Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands will be carried out at 19 impact zones, including several substantial landslip sites along the road.

This major reconstruction program follows emergency repairs carried out by Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) shortly after the cyclone to reopen the road to two lanes.

In the 12 months following those immediate fixes, TMR conducted surveys, geotechnical inspections, planning, detailed design, and engaged contractors for the complex body of improvements.

Commencement of permanent reconstruction works on the vital transport route marks a significant milestone in Far North Queensland’s recovery from the destruction of late 2023.

TMR has carefully coordinated works across all range roads in the region to maintain safe and reliable access while these scheduled repairs to Gillies Range Road are carried out.

This reconstruction program is earmarked for completion in mid-2027, weather and site conditions permitting, and will return the road to its pre-cyclone condition.

Communities throughout the Far North that rely on Gillies Range Road have been thanked for their patience while safety is restored.

Gillies Range is one of four key range crossings between Cairns and the Tablelands that were severely damaged by Tropical Cyclone Jasper.

In the more than two years since the cyclone brought record-breaking rains to the Far North, TMR crews have been working closely with local councils and contractors to clean up and repair the region's road network and return it to full capacity.

These reconstruction works are jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA),

More information on the project can be found on the Department of Transport and Main Roads website.
