Milestone Reconstruction Monitoring operation tracks disaster recovery over two seasons

Queensland’s first Reconstruction Monitoring (RM) operation for 2025 has shed light on the recovery efforts for disaster-hit properties across the state.

Run by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA), the RM operation, for the first time, included simultaneous assessments for two disaster seasons, the 2023-24 season and the 2024-25 season.

Over three weeks in June 2025, more than 35 QRA officers connected with approximately 3,500 Queensland homes and businesses, from Douglas Shire in the far north to the Gold Coast in the southeast.

The RM operation addressed impacts from significant events, including Tropical Cyclones Alfred, Jasper, and Kirrily, and the south-east Queensland Christmas storms of 2023.

Results indicate significant progress has been made in communities affected by the recent disasters.

  • For events in 2023-24:
    • Approximately 69% (2,180 properties) of identified damaged homes are now repaired.
    • Progress is underway for an additional 207 properties, with repair work initiated.
    • Of the 943 properties still showing damage, 481 have minor damage, 286 moderate damage, and 168 severe damage. Eight properties were identified as destroyed.
  • For events in 2024-25:
    • Almost 40% (750 properties) of identified damaged properties have been repaired.
    • Repair works are ongoing for a further 258 properties.
    • From the 1,121 properties still needing repairs, 600 show minor damage, 342 moderate damage, and 177 severe damage, with two properties destroyed.

Through these assessments, QRA is not only tracking the physical recovery of homes and businesses but also checking in on the wellbeing of affected residents.

Conversations with residents during RM operations allow QRA to capture a wide range of valuable information that can be used to improve recovery efforts.

The valuable insights collected help the QRA and other stakeholders, including councils and industry bodies, better understand recovery trends and address outstanding challenges.

RM operations are currently underway to support outback communities affected by the western Queensland flood events in 2025. During September, QRA officers will doorknock around 160 properties identified as damaged following the Western Queensland Surface Trough (21 March - 19 May 2025).

More information about QRA’s recovery efforts is on the QRA website.
