Over 1,800 kilometres of flood repairs rolling out on Western Downs’ roads

Extensive flood recovery works will take place across the Western Downs over the next 15 months to repair more than 1,800 kilometres of roads damaged by heavy rainfall events between November 2021 and May 2022.

In total 37 sites will be repaired, including sections of the Bunya, Leichhardt, Moonie and Warrego Highways, Dalby-Cecil Plains Road, Dalby-Jandowae Road, Surat Developmental Road, Chinchilla-Wondai Road, and Roma-Condamine Road.

This includes pavement, road shoulder and embankment repairs due to erosion, clearing table drains, culvert and drainage repairs, and removing silt and debris.

All works will be delivered by Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and are jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Following the severe rainfall of 2021-22, TMR undertook temporary repairs across Western Downs to ensure roads were safe and usable.

Since then TMR has prepared multiple flood recovery works packages to ensure efficient delivery, quality management and value for money.

Already completed have been floodway improvements on the Moonie Highway and slope stabilisation on the Bunya Highway between Bell and Kumbia.

Packaging works together helps TMR complete roadworks sooner, reducing construction impacts on road users and keeping communities connected and safe.

The rainfall and flooding of 2021-22 resulted in significant damage to state roads across 66 of Queensland's 77 local government areas.

By the time TMR’s repair pipeline for the 2021-22 disaster season is complete more than 500 road projects will be delivered across southern Queensland.
