Sports and rec flood recovery in the north sees major funding win

A $30 million investment from the state and federal governments will support flood affected sporting and recreational clubs in north and Far North Queensland following this year’s devastating floods.

Sport and Recreation Recovery Grants (SRRG) up to $1 million are now available to not-for-profit sport, rec and racing clubs in 30 eligible local government areas to assist them with the repair or replacement of damaged assets and infrastructure.

Jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), the SRRG provides an opportunity for clubs to restore the facilities they need to thrive.

This may include playing fields, lights, amenities, canteens, fences, racetracks, synthetic pitches, electrical equipment, shade sails and carparks.

Where value for money can be demonstrated, the program encourages rebuilding damaged infrastructure in ways that align with modern resilience knowledge and practices.

This approach will help communities better withstand future disaster events and get back to full strength sooner after severe weather.

Extensive flooding across northern Queensland in early 2025 caused significant devastation to community spaces, particularly in areas like Townsville, Hinchinbrook, Cassowary Coast, Burdekin and Charters Towers.

This DRFA support package is part of more than $507 million in extraordinary assistance that has been made available to the region following the summer tropical low.

The SRRG program acknowledges the key role local sporting competitions and recreational activities play in helping communities return to normal after disasters.

Repairing and rebuilding these facilities through the DRFA is crucial for both the physical and mental wellbeing of residents, as well as fostering community togetherness and recovery.

By minimising disruptions and enabling the prompt resumption of local sports, the Australian and Queensland Governments are ensuring communities across the north and Far North can rebuild and recover stronger and more united.

Grant applications are open till 24 October 2025. For more information, including the full list of eligible LGAs, and to apply, visit www.qld.gov.au/recreation/sports/funding/sport-and-recreation-recovery-grant.
