Johnathan Thurston helps Peregian Springs State School get ready

Get Ready Queensland Ambassador and rugby league legend Johnathan Thurston visited Peregian Springs State School today to discuss how students and their families are preparing for severe weather this disaster season.

Peregian Springs State School, which was impacted by the bushfires in September last year, was the random draw winner of the inaugural Get Ready Queensland schools competition.

Mr Thurston congratulated the students from Peregian Springs State School and said the visit was a great opportunity to discuss disaster preparedness with them.

During the visit JT and the students discussed what items to pack in an emergency kit, how to prepare a household emergency plan and even what goes into a pet emergency kit.

Get Ready Queensland recognises the importance of helping young people understand their disaster risk and empowering them with information to be better prepared.

The inaugural Get Ready Queensland schools competition received entries from almost 100 schools right across Queensland with more than 1500 students getting involved.

The Get Ready Queensland program is a year-round, all-hazards, resilience building initiative to help communities prepare for natural disasters, which is proudly sponsored by Suncorp.
