Event summary
South Queensland Severe Storms and Rainfall, 24 December 2023 - 3 January 2024
During this event a series of storms impacted South East Queensland, particularly the Logan, Scenic Rim and Gold Coast regions. The intense rainfall and flash flooding from the storms closed roads and caused landslips, with strong winds causing powerlines and tress to fall on homes, vehicles and across roads. Widespread power outages were experienced along with an extensive clean-up effort requiring extraordinary support.
7 South East Queensland local government areas (LGAs) - Banana, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Logan, Murweh, Redland, and Scenic Rim - have been activated for this event for a range of disaster assistance through the joint State and Commonwealth Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) to address the immediate and long-term impacts from these events. Refer to the activations page for this event for details of the specific DRFA funding measures that have been activated for each local government area.
Financial assistance and exceptional circumstances
Recovery operation
The recovery operation for this event will include:
- preparation of a business case for extraordinary assistance under the DRFA
- offers of support from QRA Recovery and Resilience Officers (RROs) to eligible councils to help develop event specific local recovery plans
- QRA as lead recovery agency liaising with Functional Recovery Groups to ensure appropriate state recovery planning.

QRA is working closely with councils to offer support to develop event specific local recovery plans that will be available following endorsement by councils.
