Community Health and Wellbeing - 2023 Tropical Cyclone Jasper

About

The $14.1 million Community Health and Wellbeing, Community Recovery and Resilience Officers, Flexible Funding Grants package aims to mitigate psychosocial impacts, help impacted individuals access financial support, builders and services, and assist NGOs with disaster preparedness and response planning, following Tropical Cyclone Jasper, associated rainfall and flooding, 13 – 28 December 2023.

The package includes:

  • $2.25 million in psychosocial and mental health support for community members to provided skills and resources for dealing with issues related to their disaster experience
  • $4.66 million for up to thirteen full-time equivalent community recovery connect workers within Neighbourhood Centres to partner with special interest and community groups in assisting vulnerable residents.
  • $1.4 million first nations community recovery to actively connect disaster impacted community members with available recovery supports and services.
  • $1.8 million towards community recovery and resilience officers to engage, support and promote recovery and resilience planning and activities at a local level.
  • $4 million in Flexible Funding Grants available across all LGAs to be used for the development of emergency, disaster preparedness and business continuity plans, including for community organisations and Neighbourhood Centres.
     

This package involves direct funding to the Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers (DLGWV) and Queensland Health to conduct community health and wellbeing activities through internal service delivery, grants programs and working closely with partner agencies to support the recovery of communities following eligible events.
 

Eligibility

Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers (DLGWV) and Queensland Health will deliver the community health and wellbeing package in the following local government areas:

  • Cairns Regional Council
  • Coast Regional Council 
  • Cook Shire Council 
  • Douglas Shire Council 
  • Hope Vale Aboriginal Shire Council  
  • Mareeba Shire Council 
  • Tablelands Regional Council 
  • Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council 
  • Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council

The package is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments to support Queensland communities in their recovery from the Tropical Cyclone Jasper, 13 - 28 December 2023 disaster event
